The holiday season has me thinking about my childhood.
Did you know I grew up in the mountains? Yes, like TRULY the mountains of Pennsylvania.
I was raised in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
In the house that we lived in while I was growing up, I could walk out of any door in my home, look in any direction and not see another house. Our home was surrounded by the forest. I believe the experience of growing up there began my love for nature.
I was an only child until I was 12 years old when my brother was born and we moved to a larger house in a traditional neighborhood. Until then, I played in those woods all the time, like all summer long! When my friends would come over, we didn’t sit in front of TV or play video games. I would take them out into my woods. I would invite them into this special place that happened to also be my home.
I was always in the woods! This was the place was where I would play pretend, where I would play house, go to work, and sing all my favorite Disney Tunes. The place I would spend all of my free time imagining and dreaming. I remember being out there so often that my mom made a rule that I couldn’t go further than she could yell, meaning that I had to be able to hear her yelling for me to come home.
My childhood in nature inspires my floral design business.
I believe that experience translates into the way that I create floral design because even (more) now that I’m in the Floral Design work looking at the way nature is art.
I look at the way that plants grow in nature, the flowers, shrubs, trees, and anything that grows out of the ground.
I look at the way that it sits.
The way that the limbs hold or sag under the weight of their flowers, fruit, berries, or leaves.
Or the way that each leaf reaches towards the sky, how the lower leaves & branches try and get around taller branches to get to the sun. This is because all of the leaves are ultimately trying to take in as much of the sunlight as possible so that they can photosynthesize and grow.
Growing up in nature has allowed me to design in a natural way, which I try to emphasize and recreate in our designs.
